Kenai River Rainbow Trout are the primary reason why we fly fish and guide where we do. The Upper Kenai section in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is our home water stretch. We fish near the town of Cooper Landing, Alaska. We also chase Kenai Rainbows up and down the river between Kenai Lake and Soldotna.
Cooper Landing is a picturesque village located at the outlet of Kenai Lake and the beginning of the Kenai River. It’s got just enough services to support visiting fly fishers. The town and private property only extends a short distance down from Kenai Lake. Then the river flows through a section of the Chugach National Forest before entering the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, adjacent to the confluence of the Russian River.
The trout are wild, indigenous, and have the food supply and genetic capacity to grow very large. Prolific runs of sockeye salmon are the major support and food source for Kenai Rainbows.
Within the Kenai River, the rainbows exhibit a variety of characteristics. Chrome, deep bodied fish that migrate in and out of the lakes, colorful resident fish that call the river home all year and sleek leopard spotted beauties from the tributaries. Kenai Rainbows are very special fish.
