Missouri River Montana Fly Fly Fishing Waters

The Missouri River is the longest river on the North American continent at over 2,340 miles from its source in Montana (3,770 km) and the second largest tributary of the Mississippi.  As a trout river, there are two primary locations of focus.  The 35 miles of water from Holter Dam near Craig down to the town of Cascade, Montana is world famous.  Not to be overlooked are several special miles below Hauser Dam just above Helena.  The Missouri has been on my radar for many years and I am now fortunate to live nearby when I am not in Alaska.  Since the Missouri has key tailwater stretches, it is fishable throughout the winter months. I have found it to be very productive in the late winter and spring and in the late fall when I return from Alaska.

The Missouri River is world famous for many reasons including lots of fish, great western scenery and excellent hatches that bring large trout to the top.  If you want technical dry fly fishing, this is a great river.  If you want to keep your rod bent, nymphing is hard to beat.  If you like to pound the banks with streamers for aggressive fish, there are miles and miles to cover.  If you want plenty of room for trout spey action, the Missouri is the place.

Outside of Alaska, Montana is my primary fishing state.  My wife is teaching in Great Falls and I have easy access to the Missouri River with great trout fishing only a short drive toward Craig.  I also have my motorized drift boat. The Missouri River is now my home water from late October through May and I'd love to share it with you.  Its easy to reach with flights into Great Falls or Helena and/or Interstate 15.
