Living the Moment

Have you ever been in the moment and realized it?  I had one of those marvelous feelings at Solomon’s Bar and Restaurant on the Cabo San Lucas harbor.  I had recently stood up with my best friends for a barefoot beach wedding.  It was mid February and I was in Mexico.  Stacy and I had just come back from a fantastic morning of fishing on the Sea of Cortez.  We were about to have some of our catch served up by a friendly sushi chef.  The bar tender handed me an icy Pacifico while Jimmy Buffet sang “But I've got to stop wishin', Got to go fishin' ", and as I squeezed my lime, Kenny Chesney started singing “Beer in Mexico”.  That’s when it hit me.

Stacy and I had already made a firm decision to get up early, make the run to San Jose, and fish the morning.  Stacy would load me from the boat to the plane, for my afternoon flight back to Montana.  I would go from the water, to the plane, to the arms of my family before bedtime. As we watched the chef work over our fish and waited for our party, we talked about strategy for the next day.  Based on what we had seen and learned, we were psyched about our prospects for hooking more fish and teasing a few Rooster Fish to take our flies.

Then came our catch-of-the-day.  Sashimi tuna and sierra only hours from the water served three ways, sushi rolled on the spot, seared tuna and even a little fried sierra fish fingers.  It was almost too good.  Enjoying fine eating and drinking in a tropical place with good friends and family after a great fishing day is an exceptional time.  Coupled with the knowledge that the next sunrise would find me going fishing once more, it was one of those extraordinary momentary feelings that I hope to hold on to forever.

Our Friend Alec of Cooper Landing with a Sierra Mackeral. Tasty!

A friend and client from Colorado once told me that as soon as he gets home from a trip, his wife suggests he plan another.  She has come to realize that he is much happier and easier to live with when a planned fishing trip is on the horizon.  Amen to that.

Jimmy Buffet - lyrics from “Pirate Looks at Forty”
I have been drunk now for over two weeks,
I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks,
But I've got to stop wishin',
Got to go fishin', I'm down to rock bottom again.
Just a few friends, just a few friends.

Stop wishin’ and don’t  wait until you hit rock bottom to go fishin’

Stop wishing and go fishing!

Kenny Chesney - lyrics from “Beer In Mexico”
So I just ...
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Do my best to waste another day
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Let the warm air melt these blues away

If you find yourself fishing in Mexico or Alaska, you’ll never waste the day regardless of how much beer you drink and the blues will melt away!
